Hacks

The ideal Show Hack is of thoroughbred type and should be capable of carrying an average adult. It must be a pleasure to ride and have excellent manners and should be in self-carriage and be light and soft to ride. It should also have correct conformation with an emphasis on quality and elegance. The movement should be smooth and graceful with a true pointing of the toe.

Small Hack – Mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms but not exceeding 154cms

Large Hack – Mare or gelding, 4 years old and over, exceeding 154cms but not exceeding 160cms

The Marjorie is the prefered saddle to use on a Hack as it gives a very comfortable ride. The bridle should be 3/8″ or 1/2″ with a raised or flat shaped noseband and a velvet browband.

Ladies should wear a navy jacket, shirt, tie, tie pin.  canary or corn coloured breeches, long black boots with a garter strap and spurs or dummy spurs, brown gloves. They should wear their hair in a bun and a navy velvet hat. The rider should carry a brown cane

Gentlemen should wear a tweed jacket, shirt, tie, tie pin. Beige or cream coloured breeches, long black boots with a garter strap and spurs or dummy spurs, brown gloves. They should wear a bowler. The rider should carry a brown cane.

For evening performances, ladies can change their hat to a top hat and wear a white or cream coloured stock.

Gentlemen should wear a black tailcoat, waistcoat, shirt and tie with black trousers and a top hat.

The horse should wear a straight cut leather saddle (generally brown), a discreet numnah if required, a good quality brown leather bridle with a velvet coloured browband. The leather may be of a finer type than used for hunters and riding horses.

The mane should be plaited and the tail pulled and cut to a few inches below the hocks. The heels, muzzle and ears should be trimmed. In an open class, the horse should wear a double or pelham bridle. A snaffle it acceptable in novice classes. Some people use a white girth or brown leather and Quartermarks should be used.
